Who are Pathologists?

Pathologists are medical specialists who interpret changes caused by disease in the body. There are 155 specialist pathologists and 58 trainee pathologists in New Zealand providing the knowledge, diagnostic skills and advice on which doctors depend to make the right decisions on patient care. Pathologists are experts in disease whose skills and training fuses together the science and medical worlds. Pathologists play a crucial role by supporting all aspects of health care through providing understanding of the presence and causes of disease and illness. Pathologists must undertake an additional 4-5 years study following the completion of medical school. This further training equips them with the skills to diagnose and treat disease through the expert use of laboratory tests.
