Branches of Pathology
Anatomical Pathology
The study of organs and tissues to determine the causes and effects of
particular diseases.
Chemical Pathology
Aims to read the state of our body’s chemistry to determine whether
an illness is the result of a disturbance.
Genetics
This type of pathology examines changes in gene sequence and structure
to help confirm diagnosis and detect disease.
Haematology
This field of pathology specifically looks at and analyses blood and blood-producing
organs.
Immunopathology
Concerned with immune responses to disease.
Microbiology
Concerned with diagnosing, treating and preventing the spread of infection.
Histopathology
Histopathologists study human tissues and cells to determine if a disease
is present, how that disease will affect the tissues/cells and how this
will impact the patient.
Cytopathology
The examination of cells for abnormalities representing disease states
– e.g. cervical and breast cancer.
